But is this true? Could there be positive effects as well? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Yes, according to a recent paper by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/ejsp.2880\">Ai<\/a> et al., published in the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>European Journal of Social Psychology<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">. Th<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">is<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> research is described below.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Investigating romantic nostalgia about ex-partners<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">In three studies, the authors tested whether reflecting on nostalgic memories of an ex would <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>increase perceptions of <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em><span>quality <\/span><\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>of and <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em><span>approach <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/au\/basics\/motivation\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at motivation\" class=\"basics-link\" hreflang=\"en-AU\">motivation<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span> toward one\u2019s <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em><span>current<\/span><\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span> romantic relationship.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Note, approach motivation <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>refers to a tendency to <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>seek desirable outcomes<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>. Furthermore, <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>\u201creflecting on nostalgic memories about one\u2019s ex-partner increased perception of self-growth and subsequently the perception of higher relationship quality.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Study 3<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em><span>Sample: <\/span><\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>181 (95 women); median age of 32 years old (18-79 range).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em><span>Methods:<\/span><\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span> <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span>There were<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span> two conditions.
