another is whether they can<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> tell, from the sound of laughter only, <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">if <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">two individuals are friends or romantic partners.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">A recent study by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10919-022-00406-5\">Farley<\/a> et al., <\/span><\/span><\/span>published in the <em>Journal of Nonverbal Behavior<\/em>, <span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">concluded that people are <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">indeed a<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">ble to identify, with accuracy above chance, whether <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">a <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">stranger\u2019<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">s <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">laughter is <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">directed at a friend <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">or recent romantic partner. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Investigating Laughter and Relationship Status <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Study 1<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Sample of raters:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> college students (N = 50; 15 male); <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">average age of 25 years old (range of 18 to 53 years); 46 percent African-American and 42 percent European-American.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Methods:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> Raters came to the laboratory and listened to laughs from archived phone calls. <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">These involved 27 callers (14 women) in the early stages of a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/au\/basics\/relationships\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at romantic relationship\" class=\"basics-link\" hreflang=\"en-AU\">romantic relationship<\/a>, who had made calls either to their romantic partners or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/au\/basics\/homosexuality\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at same-sex\" class=\"basics-link\" hreflang=\"en-AU\">same-sex<\/a> friends. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Raters were instructed to evaluate the laughs for pleasantness and to guess whether they were directed at <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">a caller\u2019s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> romantic partner or friend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Study 2<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Sample:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><span> 58 students <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Methods:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">P<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">articipants completed a<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> scale <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">developed by the authors, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">which aimed to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">captur<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> perceptions of laughter that is spontaneous versus fake: breathy\/not breathy, changing\/monotone, loud\/soft, natural\/forced, and relaxed\/tense. <\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">The scale development was informed by previous research show<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">ing that<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> authentic laughter tends to be more variable, breathier, and louder, and to sound more natural and relaxed. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Also<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> measured <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">were <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">perceptions of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">laughter <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">vulnerability: feminine\/masculine, baby-like\/mature, scatterbrained\/serious-minded, submissive\/dominant, and warm\/cold.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Overall,<em> e<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>ight <\/em>laughs <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">were evaluated, meaning <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">t<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">wo prototypical laughs <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">from the previous investigation<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> for each of the four types of laughter: male-friend, male-romantic partner, female-friend, and female-romantic partner. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Study 3<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Sample:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> 252 Prolific workers (125 men); 48 from the United States, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">with the rest coming from<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> Mexico, Poland, Portugal, India, and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">few other countries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><em>Methods:<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"> Raters listened to 12 laughs, three from each of four conditions (female\/male friends and female\/male romantic partners).
